The 91st annual Academy Awards nominees were announced this morning by "The Big Sick" Director/Actor, Kumail Nanjiani and "Black-ish" star Tracee Ellis Ross.

A lot stood out as favorites in past award shows and some surprises at who were nominated. OF COURSE there were snubs that had me very disappointed by who was nominated. Oscars will always miss one or two people or films that should have been nominated but were given to films and people that won past awards for the film....

My Predictions:
My predictions on who will win, which will be in BOLD.
I am basing my predictions off of films I have seen, (which, I have seen ALL films that are nominated for Best Picture) and those who have won past awards for their films. Even if I do not like the film (The Favourite).... I still believe certain nominees will win because of the reviews, and recognition they have gotten for the film thus far.
Best Picture:
“Black Panther” “BlacKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody” “The Favourite” “Green Book” “Roma” - because I think people aren't expecting it to win, but due to the high number of nominations it has received this year and its wins in the recents award shows.. I put my money on this film. “A Star Is Born” “Vice”
Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “Vice” - HANDS DOWN. If you know anything about Bale as an actor and have seen this film you will understand how incredible he was in this role. He captured everything a character needs. Fantastic work! Bradley Cooper, “A Star Is Born” Willem Dafoe, “At Eternity’s Gate” Rami Malek, “Bohemian Rhapsody” Viggo Mortensen, “Green Book”
Lead Actress:
Yalitza Aparicio, “Roma” Glenn Close, “The Wife” - She is a favorite at winning this category for her role in the Wife. I have NOT seen this film, I plan to see it ASAP. But I hear wonderful things about her acting in this film and cannot wait to see it. Olivia Colman, “The Favourite” Lady Gaga, “A Star Is Born” Melissa McCarthy, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Supporting Actor:
Mahershala Ali, “Green Book” - Saw this film, and will say he was absolutely FANTASTIC! His character brought me to tears from start to finish. Wonderful wonderful film!!! Go see it if you are debating.. don't debate, go do yourself a favor and watch this!! Adam Driver, “BlacKkKlansman” Sam Elliott, “A Star Is Born” Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Sam Rockwell, “Vice”
Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, “Vice” Marina de Tavira, “Roma” Regina King, “If Beale Street Could Talk” - She has won past awards for this role and I believe she is leading to win this award. I did see this film (more in my subs section). Emma Stone, “The Favourite” Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
Director:
Spike Lee, “BlacKkKlansman” Pawel Pawlikowski, “Cold War” Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” Alfonso Cuarón, “Roma” - He captured such an interesting viewpoint of what it is to work and live in Mexico. It was well told film that moved me and made me remember my own childhood. I did see this movie and will say this is a film will most likely leave many hispanics feeling a connection to this film. Adam McKay, “Vice”
Animated Feature:
“Incredibles 2,” Brad Bird “Isle of Dogs,” Wes Anderson “Mirai,” Mamoru Hosoda “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Rich Moore, Phil Johnston “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman - It has won all the other awards it was nominated for and has gotten excellent reviews for this animated feature. I have NOT seen this film.
Animated Short: I cannot judge this category I did NOT see ANY of these films, and/or have NOT heard of them. They will likely be shown in an Alamo Drafthouse Theater near you.
“Animal Behaviour,” Alison Snowden, David Fine “Bao,” Domee Shi “Late Afternoon,” Louise Bagnall “One Small Step,” Andrew Chesworth, Bobby Pontillas “Weekends,” Trevor Jimenez
Adapted Screenplay:
“The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Joel Coen , Ethan Coen “BlacKkKlansman,” Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Barry Jenkins - I HAVE seen this film. I believe it will and SHOULD win because he was NOT nominated for Best Director, or Best Picture I would like to think he has a good shot at winning this one. This film was adapted from James Baldwin, which captures real life struggles for black individuals in Washington Heights. It is so well done!! I highly recommend seeing this even if it was NOT nominated for Best Picture. (more in the snubs section of my blog - bottom of page) “A Star Is Born,” Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
Original Screenplay:
“The Favourite,” Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara “First Reformed,” Paul Schrader “Green Book,” Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly - Again, I have seen this one and believe it will win this because it won many other awards for this category.. The topic and main focus of this film is not only about these two characters of different races but it brings the big discussion on racism in the south. Excellent film! “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón “Vice,” Adam McKay
Cinematography:
“Cold War,” Lukasz Zal “The Favourite,” Robbie Ryan “Never Look Away,” Caleb Deschanel “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón - Roma was shot from what I believe was shot from a child's point of view. The way the camera is held at a smaller, shorter angle where it gets the point of view from the knees up. I did not notice that until after the movie was finished. From my understanding this was created from the directors own childhood. So it makes sense that I would think it was shot this way. “A Star Is Born,” Matthew Libatique
Best Documentary Feature:
“Free Solo,” Jimmy Chin, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” RaMell Ross “Minding the Gap,” Bing Liu “Of Fathers and Sons,” Talal Derki “RBG,” Betsy West, Julie Cohen - I did see this movie, and will say it was one of the important documentaries I really fell for. People in my generation need to see this and understand the importance of the supreme court justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Best Documentary Short Subject: I cannot judge this category I did NOT see ANY of these films, and/or have NOT heard of them. They will likely be shown in an Alamo Drafthouse Theater near you.
“Black Sheep,” Ed Perkins “End Game,” Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman “Lifeboat,” Skye Fitzgerald “A Night at the Garden,” Marshall Curry “Period. End of Sentence.,” Rayka Zehtabchi
Best Live Action Short Film: I cannot judge this category I did NOT see ANY of these films, and/or have NOT heard of them. They will likely be shown in an Alamo Drafthouse Theater near you.
“Detainment,” Vincent Lambe “Fauve,” Jeremy Comte “Marguerite,” Marianne Farley “Mother,” Rodrigo Sorogoyen “Skin,” Guy Nattiv
Best Foreign Language Film:
“Capernaum” (Lebanon) “Cold War” (Poland) - This film I have NOT seen. I plan to see it, because the reviews are rather mixed. But with that said, I feel this may win if Roma wins Best Picture, which was my prediction. “Never Look Away” (Germany) “Roma” (Mexico) - This may be a toss up between A Cold War . I say that only because I predicted it may win Best Picture. THOUGH- I do not know if the film can win both, Best picture and Foreign Film... I want to say it can, which is why I picked 2 films as my predictions. “Shoplifters” (Japan)
Film Editing:
“BlacKkKlansman,” Barry Alexander Brown “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Ottman “Green Book,” Patrick J. Don Vito “The Favourite,” Yorgos Mavropsaridis “Vice,” Hank Corwin
Sound Editing:
“Black Panther,” Benjamin A. Burtt, Steve Boeddeker “Bohemian Rhapsody,” John Warhurst “First Man,” Ai-Ling Lee, Mildred Iatrou Morgan “A Quiet Place,” Ethan Van der Ryn, Erik Aadahl “Roma,” Sergio Diaz, Skip Lievsay
Sound Mixing:
“Black Panther” “Bohemian Rhapsody” - toss up between Black Panther and Bohemian. This one was hard to predict on. “First Man” “Roma” “A Star Is Born”
Production Design:
“Black Panther,” Hannah Beachler “First Man,” Nathan Crowley, Kathy Lucas - I did see this film. Fun Fact: I had to leave the theater during the movie. I threw up because of one scene, it felt so real as if I was there moving around in a circle that it made me incredibly sick. The production was great, made it feel like you were there on the moon. I really liked this film. “The Favourite,” Fiona Crombie, Alice Felton “Mary Poppins Returns,” John Myhre, Gordon Sim “Roma,” Eugenio Caballero, Bárbara Enrı́quez
Original Score:
“BlacKkKlansman,” Terence Blanchard “Black Panther,” Ludwig Goransson - Only because it won past awards. Again, this category I may be completely off. “If Beale Street Could Talk,” Nicholas Britell “Isle of Dogs,” Alexandre Desplat “Mary Poppins Returns,” Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman
Original Song:
“All The Stars” from “Black Panther” by Kendrick Lamar, SZA “I’ll Fight” from “RBG” by Diane Warren, Jennifer Hudson “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from “Mary Poppins Returns” by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born” by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt and Benjamin Rice - Its winning everything. It is a great song and I am sure she, being Lady Gaga, will win this one rather than Best Lead Actress. “When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” by Willie Watson, Tim Blake Nelson
Makeup and Hair:
“Border” “Mary Queen of Scots” “Vice” - Christian Bale TRANSFORMED into Dick Chaney.. it was honestly scary!! The look of him in his older years was absolutely incredible. Even Bale himself after winning a few awards in this category will say if not for the Hair and Makeup... this film would not be nominated for anything. I agree. I did see this film.
Costume Design:
“Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” Mary Zophres “Black Panther,” Ruth E. Carter “The Favourite,” Sandy Powell “Mary Poppins Returns,” Sandy Powell “Mary Queen of Scots,” Alexandra Byrne - I did see this film. Thought it was to a "T" on how attire was worn during those times. I LOVE that era, and I look for everything when they do any type of film during the Tudor era, and after. I have read a lot of books, and watched shows were they fall short on attire. This film did an excellent job to the buttons and earrings that Queen Mary wore in the film. I recommend this film!
Visual Effects:
“Avengers: Infinity War” “Christopher Robin” “First Man” - Again, made me sick.. I believe the effects in this film were well done and I believe this will win. I don't have much to say otherwise about this film... I did not LOVE it... not because it made me sick, but because it just was okay. I do not really recommend it... only if you are into the moon landing or into the actors in the film. “Ready Player One” “Solo: A Star Wars Story
My Subs:
There are a few on the top of my head I will want to discuss in full length discussion... but since this blog is already long I will get to the point. This is based on my own opinion... not on anyone else's reviews or website.

Barry Jenkins - for Director and Best Picture for "If Beale Streets Could Talk"
If you did not see this film or read this book by James Baldwin... DO IT! GO READ IT. GO SEE IT! You will NOT be disappointed... unless you did see it and etc and see it was not recognized for the incredible work...like I am. I am so disappointed that he was NOT nominated for this! He won for Moonlight last year and I do understand why he was snubbed this year. HUGE shame on the Academy for this! For me, he had the best picture..or least deserved the shot at winning!

Three Identical Strangers - for Best Documentary Feature
This was based on true story that really held its own. Being adopted I cannot imagine not knowing if I had a sibling that lived a few blocks down, or even attended the same college I did. It is a heartbreaking story that EVERYONE should see!! I am SO SORRY it was not nominated. These brothers and their families went through so much because of some science research project. The people who conducted or were part of the research brought chills, anger, range and tears when they would appear on screen. It really frustrated me as as someone who would want to know who their family members are. EXCELLENT film!! It will be shown on CNN THIS WEEKEND. Go over to CNN's website for more info. (if this is past the time it was shown on television, you can rent and buy it now.)

John David Washington - Best Actor in BlackKklansman
I suppose it had to have Bale, Malek and the others for Best Actor. But others considered this to be a huge snub, I did in some ways. I understand why he wasn't I didn't LOVE his performance. But he was still good. He had a character who challenged racism. I also thought maybe he was snubbed because he is the son of Denzel Washington.. but people could say it either way... "he was nominated because of his father, but not because of his father." It is a double edged sword.. and I believe until he makes more films he WILL be known as Denzel's Son...sadly.

Bradley Cooper - for Director for "A Star Is Born"
In some ways yes, he was subbed, it other ways... no. He is a NEW director and therefore, needs to create MORE films. Many people are comparing this snub to Ben Affleck's "Argo" film, which was also snubbed for Best Director. He did a great job if you are looking at it with his background in acting aside... he really did a nice job as this being his first film.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Green Book" - for Original Score
I saw both of these films and will say that they were WELL done, visually and musically. They both had wonderful songs that were featured in the film that I found should have been recognized for it. Queen alone should have nominated... the music will go on forever. HOWEVER, not everyone can be nominated.. and I understand that. But these two snubs had me scratching my head in confusion. Shame. I recommend both films! Bohemian was so fantastic!! I am NOT a Queen fan, but after seeing it I understand why people are.

Claire Foy - Lead Actress in First Man
I saw this film and will say two things. 1) not shocked it was not nominated for Best Picture... because it wasn't. It wasn't that great. It was good.. but not worthy of being nominated. 2) Claire Foy as the wife of Armstrong, she carried this film on her back. I believe that is why I enjoyed the film.. because of HER character. Otherwise, this film fell flat for me and not surprised by the outcome. She has been nominated in other award shows for this role and has won them.. so for her NOT to be nominated for it.. I was shocked and kinda disappointed the two stars of the Favourite were....
To find out who wins the Oscar...The 91st annual Academy Awards will air Sunday, February 24th at 8pm/est. only on ABC.
